Tailoring Black Style: A look into the 2025 Met Gala fashion
By Shivani Dubey | 6 May 2025 | Culture, Design, Style
With fashion’s biggest night returning with a focus on menswear, we check out the most fashionable looks at the 2025 Met Gala
The first Monday in May is the biggest event in the fashion calendar. This is the day when the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York unveils its costume exhibit with the Met Gala — an extravagant night that merges fashion, celebrity and culture. For the 2025 iteration, the exhibition is called “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, which centres around the political and aesthetic constructs of Black dandyism.
The 2025 costume exhibit examines the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora. It is inspired by co-curator Monica Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, in which she explores Black dandyism as both an aesthetic and political construct. This is the first exhibition since 2003’s “Men in Skirts” to focus exclusively on menswear.
To celebrate this exhibit, celebrities were tasked with dressing to the theme of “Tailored for You” with a focus on menswear for the 2025 Met Gala on 5 May. Think many interpretations of perfectly tailored suits, along with classic menswear staples such as hats, ties, brooches, pocket squares, canes and more. The red carpet was led by this year’s Met Gala co-chairs Pharrell Williams, actor Colman Domingo, Tempus cover star Sir Lewis Hamilton and musician A$AP Rocky and honourary co-chair LeBron James, with Domingo paying a poignant tribute to fashion titan André Leon Tally with a giant blue cape.
Some of the standout fashion moments included Zendaya’s simple but impeccably tailored Louis Vuitton ensemble, Rihanna and Teyana Taylor in custom Marc Jacobs, Cardi B and Jodie Turner-Smith in custom Burberry and a showstopping return to the Met steps by Diana Ross.
The men at the 2025 Met Gala also took full advantage of the menswear centric theme and went above and beyond just boring tuxedos and black ties. Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin wore duck blue velvet gloves, a Zenith timepiece and a cane. Meanwhile, Damson Idris showed up in an F1 suit first in a nod to his upcoming film, which was then torn up to reveal a gorgeous three-piece Tommy Hilfiger ensemble. Model Alton Mason, Khaby Lame, Chance the Rapper, actor Brian Tyree Henry, Severance’s Tramell Tillman in Thom Browne, Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan (in custom Sabyasachi), Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh and Regé-Jean Page (wearing TAG Heuer) were just some of the other celebrities who took the 2025 Met Gala fashion to the next level.
The Met Gala is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, with the event raising sums of over eight figures each year.
