The Balvenie unveils final whisky in its rare Fifty Collection

The Balvenie has released the third and final edition of its rarest collection to date – the Fifty Collection
The Balvenie has released the Third Edition of The Fifty Collection, completing its rarest collection to date. Comprising three individual bottlings – the First, Second, and Third Editions – the Fifty Collection is a tribute to ‘tradition, expertise, and the enduring spirit of The Balvenie’ and reflects the stories of the many makers at The Balvenie distillery that have contributed to this whisky.
With only 45 bottles available worldwide, the Third Edition is a marriage of three 50-year-old casks selected by the Speyside distillery’s malt master Kelsey McKechnie. Building on the first two releases, the Third Edition introduces a final American oak barrel filled in 1974 to complete the trilogy. The Third Edition of The Balvenie Fifty Collection has notes of buttery pastry, confectionary delights, golden Manuka honey and ripe soft fruit interwoven with a subtle oak spice. 
The Balvenie craftspeople, led by the former malt master David C Stewart, came together in 1973 and again in 1974 to fill these casks, marking the beginning of The Balvenie Fifty Collection’s journey. Many of those craftspeople still work for The Balvenie today.
For a whisky so rare, the packaging had to match the grandeur. Each presentation contains over 100 different elements, including seven layers of wood in the helix structure and a crafted 14 carat gold plated brass display. When compared to the first two releases, the Third Edition has an even darker wood stain applied to the grain, while each hand-blown bottle is individually numbered.
Speaking about the whisky, Kelsey explained the history and the process behind the creation of this collection.
“The Balvenie Fifty Collection pays tribute to the makers, craftspeople and custodians who have watched over our liquid for the past five decades. It’s a privilege to select the casks which make up this celebration of our legacy, and I am thrilled that we can finally share this special dram,” said Kelsey.
“Marrying together rare casks to create something extraordinary is a fitting testament to the stories that precede each cask. For the Third Edition, we selected an American oak barrel filled in 1974, bringing a balance and depth to the final composition. Its sweet, honeyed note and gentle oak spice complement the European butt and American hogshead of the First and Second Editions, creating contrast and continuity across the trilogy.
“The collection reflects our respect for tradition and our commitment to looking to the future by preserving the rare crafts of whisky making from barley to bottle,” she added.
