Chef Gordon Ramsay celebrates the launch of his milestone 100th restaurant at London’s 22 Bishopsgate
Gordon Ramsay is one of the most prolific and well-known chefs in the modern world. A bona fide celebrity chef as comfortable on our television screens as he is in the kitchen, Gordon has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the culinary world. Now, he is celebrating a landmark moment as he opens his 100th restaurant, Bread Street Kitchen & Bar, at 22 Bishopsgate in London. This milestone was celebrated with a launch party at the new opening in May, where Tempus was on hand to speak to the international chef and sample the menu.
“It’s been a long and hard journey to get to this moment,” Gordon told Tempus. “There were times when it felt almost impossible, so to be here today and celebrate with everyone is incredible. It’s a dream come true.”
The 59-year-old began his career aged 19 apprenticing as a line chef at Marco Pierre White at Harvey’s. Gordon has described the legendary chef as the best mentor he ever had – but also the most demanding. Eager to study more French cuisine, Gordon worked with Albert Roux at Le Gavroche before moving to Paris aged 23 to work with Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon. His star now rising quickly, Gordon became head chef of London restaurant Aubergine 1993; the restaurant quickly earned its first and second Michelin star under his leadership. 1998 saw Gordon stepping out on his own to open his first Restaurant Gordon Ramsay – by 2001 the Chelsea landmark would have three Michelin stars.
Fame came calling in 1999 with the documentary series Boiling Point, which introduced the world to Gordon’s dynamic television persona. From there, he became a household name with a run of gastronomic hits including Hell’s Kitchen and Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares.
He has been awarded 17 Michelin stars throughout his career, of which he currently holds eight, and his contributions to the hospitality industry earned him an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2006. Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix documentary Being Gordon Ramsay, which chronicles his career to present day.
It was this introspective mindset we were met with when Gordon greeted guests at the Bread Street Kitchen launch. The chef delivered a heartfelt speech about the importance of this landmark opening, and spoke about how “a quintessential full English breakfast” was the best way to celebrate this occasion.
“This is quite a milestone for me, and I couldn’t think of anything better to kick [the 100th restaurant celebrations] off,” he said.
The 61-floor, 278m-high 22 Bishopsgate is also home to Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay High, with Bread Street Kitchen & Bar completing the trio of projects finding a home in one of London’s tallest buildings. It holds special meaning for the celebrity chef, who describes London as “where [his] journey began”.
“I’ve been lucky enough to open restaurants all over the world, but there’s something truly unique about London. It’s where my journey began, and it’s the city I’m proud to call home.
“Watching it evolve into a global culinary powerhouse has been remarkable,” he said previously, at the launch of Lucky Cat. “Building this beautiful space has been an ambitious project, but that’s exactly what makes Gordon Ramsay Restaurants so special – we never stop pushing boundaries.”
“I couldn’t be more excited to open three of our most iconic restaurants, all reimagined, taken to new heights, and built under one roof. A place where anyone can come and level up their skills in the kitchen – it’s unbelievable. It’s about creating something extraordinary for those who share our passion for great food and this incredible city,” he added.
The menu at Bread Street Kitchen & Bar features more than 35 dishes, making it the most elevated iteration of this restaurant yet. From lobster benedict and hot cakes at breakfast to Galician T bone steak and Meyer lemon cheesecake during lunch and dinner, the restaurant is designed for guests to enjoy any meal of their day. The full English is of course, a highlight, as are the bar snacks that are available at the dedicated sports bar included into the venue, where guests can watch live sport from around the world at any time.
With this 100th restaurant, Gordon Ramsay has cemented himself as a culinary titan by not only creating a space for patrons to enjoy Michelin-quality meals, but also a place high above the city where people can foster community over truly elevated dining.
