Luxury on the lake: Hotel d’Angleterre is a haven of personalised luxury in Geneva

From unique rooms to the popular Leopard Bar, the five-star boutique hotel is setting the bar high

Hotel d’Angleterre Geneva reviewFrom Watches and Wonders and Concours d’Elégance Suisse to its reputation as a global banking and political hub, Geneva is one of Europe’s most important destinations for all things luxury and commercial. Yet, as such an international city, it can be difficult to find real Swiss charm and character amid its sometimes bland and businesslike five-star offerings. Enter Hotel d’Angleterre, a boutique five-star hotel in Geneva owned by the Red Carnation Group – whose London hotels include The Milestone and Hotel 41. Overlooking Lac Léman with views of the Jet d’Eau and Mont Blanc, Hotel d’Angleterre takes the Red Carnation concept of personalised luxury to a new level of detail, welcoming guests like family friends.

Rather than listing the usual five-star service as a point of order, Hotel d’Angleterre defines itself by its differences. Each of its 39 rooms and six suites is individually designed with all mod cons, from sumptuous textures that exude Swiss grandeur, brightly decorated rooms that capitalise on the fresh lake views, or romantic suites colour-drenched in deep contemporary hues.

Its concierge team is on hand for expert recommendations and arrangements, whether your interests lie in watchmaking masterclasses or excursions to medieval Gruyère (where one can indulge in cheese fondue before visiting the Charlie Chaplin museum in Vevey, where the pioneering filmmaker lived for 25 years).

Like its London sister hotels, art plays a vital role in the hotel – fine art lithographs by Miró, Calder and Picasso hang in suites, while contemporary artists and exclusive commissions add vibrant colour and character to the refined lobby, restaurants and bars.

Led by executive chef Alexandre Cardiga, Le 17 is one of the finest grill restaurants in the city, inspired by panoramic views of the lake and distant mountains, and with a focus on fresh and seasonal cooking. From lobster taglioni to Lake Geneva féra fillet, Swiss beef fillet Rossini to Swiss chateaubriand, this is a menu bursting with flavour and fire.

Its atmosphere is unmatched, with distinctive décor (heavy on the leopard print) that encapsulates the city’s joie de vivre.

Enjoy light bites from a delicious bar menu (complete with signature steak sandwiches, charcuterie, sushi and more) accompanied by live jazz sessions – but it is the cocktail menu that really shines in this stand-out venue. Fine wines selected by master sommelier Julien Meurillon, as well as over 50 whiskies, complete the menu.

For more intimate relaxation, cigar aficionados can enjoy a premium cigar menu in the venue’s Cigar Lounge, where a stream of live entertainment ensures guests don’t miss out. A cutting-edge air-flow extraction system in the floor and the ceiling’s wooden panelling ensures total comfort, while on-hand experts can guide you through taste and provenance of the exceptional available cigars.

While the venue itself is impressive, it is the small touches – a complimentary boat shuttle for guests, guided tasting menus, a commitment to sustainability that seamlessly enhances every part of your stay – that truly makes Hotel d’Angleterre unforgettable.
