Breguet unveils brand new version of Reine de Naples collection for International Women’s Day

The luxury watch brand has released the new timepiece as an ode to femininity to mark Women’s History Month

Breguet Reine de NaplesLuxury Swiss watch brand Breguet has unveiled a brand new timepiece to join their Reine de Naples collection in celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. The watch is meant to be an ode to femininity which pays tribute to “the women who have made indelible marks on history”.

The new timepiece is mint green in colour — which signifies hope — and joins the palette of soft colours like pink, grey and white interpretations that make up the Reine de Naples collection. The dial of this new version is in white mother-of-pearl and features a sparkling chapter ring crafted using the snow-setting technique. The surrounding black minutes track is adorned with symbols inspired by the pocket watches developed by founder Abraham-Louis Breguet, with a pear shaped diamond inserted at the 6 o’clock mark.

The inner flange and bezel are adorned with 117 diamonds, giving the dial a luminous glow. The crown is also topped with a briolette-cut diamond and the alligator leather strap is fastened by a folding clasp adorned with 28 brilliant-cut diamonds. The story behind the Reine de Naples collection is very significant for Women’s History Month, as the world’s first wristwatch was created by Abraham-Louis Breguet at the request of Napoleon Bonaparte’s younger sister Caroline Murat, who was very fond of Breguet’s work.

During the 1810s, men had pocket watches and women wore their watches as sautoir necklaces. There was never a watch that a man or a woman could wear on their wrist. So Caroline tasked Abraham-Louis Breguet with creating a watch that she could wear on her wrist, which resulted in the world’s first wristwatch: a slender oblong creation which framed a silver guilloché dial and included a quarter repeater, a moon phase and a thermometer. A wristlet of hair was woven with gold thread to enable the wearer to adorn it on their wrist.
