Rolex has partnered with Wallpaper to publish an authorised book that takes readers through the history of the Oyster Perpetual Submariner watch
Swiss luxury watchmaker Rolex has partnered with global design authority Wallpaper to publish the first authorised history of the Oyster Perpetual Submariner watch.
Written by author and watch expert Nicholas Foulkes, the book titled ‘Oyster Perpetual Submariner – the watch that unlocked the deep’, will be available to buy in English and French from 1 October. It is the first in a series of titles exploring the brand’s watches.
The book is a wide-ranging account of the Submariner, which is the first divers’ watch that is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres. The book chronicles the technical innovation that went into creating the watch alongside the adventures of the pioneers who tested prototypes.

“The Submariner, the archetype of the divers’ watch, epitomises the historic link between Rolex and underwater exploration,” says Arnaud Boetsch, director of communication and image at Rolex.
“Over time it has evolved into an iconic timepiece whose renown extends well beyond the marine world, becoming the true action watch of choice for a wide range of sports and other activities,” he added, saying that he is “proud and delighted” to have partnered with Wallpaper to publish this story.
Author Nicholas Foulkes describes writing this book as an honour due to the historical significance of the watch.

“As a historian with a lifelong obsession with watches, I was delighted and excited to be given unique access to the Rolex archives and flattered and honoured to be invited to set down in print the first authorised accounts of timepieces that have helped shape history,” says Nicholas.
“I am very grateful to Rolex for having placed its trust in me to be the one to write its story. It is a fascinating tale, to which I have tried to do justice,” he added.
The book also includes Rolex Testimonees who are featured in Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative, which supports organisations and individuals involved in the exploration and protection of the environment.
