Review: Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay at 22 Bishopsgate is a class above

With 360° views of the London skyline, incredible food and lovely staff, Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay at 22 Bishopsgate more than lives up to the hype

Lucky Cat Bishopsgate Gordon RamsayWalking into Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay at 22 Bishopsgate is not that different from walking through security at an airport. There are two security checkpoints before you make it to the elevator that takes you over 60 stories to what is now the highest restaurant in Europe. And as soon as you enter the restaurant, it feels like you have flown to a completely different destination from where you started.

Lucky Cat Bishopsgate is easily one of the most anticipated restaurant openings this year — and it more than delivers on the hype. From the restaurant’s floor to ceiling windows that offer a spectacular view of the stunning London skyline to the chic decor, exceptional service and food — everything is world class, as one has come to expect from Gordon Ramsay’s culinary endeavours. 

We start with a round of cocktails: I choose the Murasaki Colada, which is the restaurant’s take on a classic piña colada and my colleague goes for a Lemongrass Cha, both of which offer a refreshing start to our evening as we gear up to dive into Lucky Cat’s extensive menu.

Related: 4 fine dining restaurants in London to visit for Iftar during RamadanFirst, we indulge in a round of deliciously spiced edamame and padron peppers, which is a great indicator of how the rest of the evening was going to go. We also sample some incredible softshell crab maki and yellowtail nigiri. The fish is light and melts right in my mouth, while the crab is a surprisingly delightful take on a classic maki.

Next, we sample some of Gordon Ramsay’s classic fried chicken. An evergreen favourite, it is simply delicious, with the hot korean miso sauce acting as the perfect compliment. My colleague also orders some wagyu gyoza, and judging by her reaction when she takes the very first bite, these might be some of the best dumplings she has had in a while.

My favourite dish of the night, however, was the bonito fried duck leg bao. This dish is Gordon Ramsay’s take on a duck pancake, but with a bao bun. The staff brings out the usual trimmings — bao buns monogrammed with the Lucky Cat logo, schezuan, hoisin sauce, some apple slices and cabbage — before presenting the main event: a perfectly marinated crispy duck leg which is broken into tiny pieces right in front of you.As someone who has recently come to love duck pancakes, this was incredible. Eating it in a bao bun is certainly a different experience, but one I would gladly have again and again. The sauces, apple and cabbage paired perfectly, and the duck was cooked to perfection.

We also indulged in some deliciously spicy pork chops with a side of fried rice and tenderstem broccoli, which formed the perfect end to an incredible evening.

As we begin to wrap up, one thing becomes abundantly clear: the food at Lucky Cat Bishopsgate is absolutely amazing, but the star of the show, by far, is the view from this building. Our table was right by the windows, and watching the sun give way to a starry night — both in the sky and on the ground — with the lights throughout the London skyline twinkling like stars, is mesmerizing to watch.

That is what it is like to dine by that window at Lucky Cat Bishopsgate.

Before we leave, we spend a few more minutes at our table, sipping on our glasses of white wine, taking in the expansive London skyline before us. You can see the St Paul’s Cathedral off to the side, with the Tower Bridge and London Eye not too far off. 

It is a serene view from our vantage point, as we watch the people of London go on with their lives. Soon, we will be back on the ground, becoming the very people we are watching from up here. But for now, we enjoy the view.
