Tasty Tipples: where to celebrate National Tequila Day

With National Tequila Day fast approaching, we share six of our favourite London locations for a craft cocktail

Whether you prefer Palomas or make a mean Margarita, National Tequila Day (Monday 24th July) offers the perfect excuse to sample several cocktails made with Mexico’s much-loved spirit.

From refreshingly tangy twists for summer, to truffle-scented serves, we share five of our favourites:

Taco at St James Bar

Green tequila cocktail on a bar

A sophisticated space nestled inside the Sofitel London St James hotel, St James Bar offers cocktails inspired by cultures and cuisines across the globe. We love its glamorous yet comfortable interiors replete with antique mirror tables, soft lighting, and velvet banquettes.

For National Tequila Day the Taco (£22), inspired by Mexican flavours, is a must-try. This lightly spiced twist on a Tommy’s Margarita features Don Julio Blanco Tequila, coriander, Ancho Reyes Verde, Acqua Bianca, lime & grapefruit juice, and agave nectar.

Maestra Bertha at The Churchill Bar & Terrace

Named in tribute to Sir Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine, it’s no wonder The Churchill Bar & Terrace is known for its quality cigars as much as its impressive craft cocktails.

For tequila-lovers the nutty Maestra Bertha (£44) – a luxurious cocktail combining Anejo Tequila Casa Dragones, Pedro Ximenez, Angostura Bitter, Toasted Pecan Bitter and Black Truffle Perfume – is a must-try. Named after Bertha Gonzalez Nieves, the first female ‘Maestra Tequilera’, the cocktail is part of the bar’s new UNITY menu, honouring the heritage and craft of the multi-cultural bar team.

Tai at Din Tai Fung Centre Point

Yellow tequila cocktail on wooden table with yellow dust

With an international reputation for elegant Taiwanese cuisine, Din Tai Fung caused queues around the block as London’s much-hyped ‘must visit’ hot spot when it first landed in the city. Five years on, and with three London venues, its popularity is yet to wane as it maintains its reputation as the best dumpling chain in the world.

Dumplings aside, its cocktails are equally hype-worthy. At the new Centre Point restaurant a separate bar area – the first for the brand – offers panoramic views of the city. From the selection of signature cocktails, our pick for National Tequila Day has to be the Tai (£13.80), a fruity yet tangy mixture of citrus-infused Patrón Silver tequila, pineapple juice, lime juice, agave syrup and honey.

Dawn Cocktail at Manetta’s Bar at Flemings Mayfair

Cocktail, bottle of tequila and menu on a bar

Beneath the bustling streets of Mayfair, Manetta’s Bar at Flemings Mayfair Hotel is a sophisticated spot for both literature lovers and cocktail connoisseurs. Famed for being the setting of Agatha Christie’s At Bertram’s Hotel, it’s the perfect haunt to enjoy a drink or two. For tequila lovers, the Dawn (£19) is a carefully balanced mix of Don Julio Tequila 1942, fig liqueur, Falernum agave syrup and pure green juice.

Award-winning Artesian is globally recognised for its progressive cocktails and Head Bartender Giulia Cuccurullo is something of an expert when it comes to tequila, awarded Global Winner of Patròn Perfectionists 2020 and UK Winner in 2019.

His new Moringa cocktail (£23) is a must-try; a herbal take on the margarita, effortlessly combining unexpected ingredients. With hints of bergamot, the cocktail features Casamigos Blanco, Italicus, Moringa, Lime, and Aduki Beans.
