Keflavik’s Diamond Suites Hotel is an Icelandic gem for adventurous travellers

Perfectly situated for deep-water explorers of the Silfra caves, Iceland’s first five-star boutique hotel is a cut above the rest

* The Reykjanesbær peninsula is an area of dramatic beauty in Iceland

Iceland might be a small country, but its dramatic landscapes and rich culture make it a true gem of the Scandinavian region. But despite its appeal to the adventurous travellers among us, there has been little rush to bring luxury hotels and resorts to the region.

Cue Hotel Keflavik, a boutique hotel owned by Steinþór Jónsson and his wife Hildur on the western coast of Reykjanesbær, whose upper floors have undergone extensive renovations in order to open the country's first five-star hotel, the Diamond Suites Boutique Hotel.

Each suite is named after a precious gemstone – Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, Opal, Emerald and Pearl – and boasts a unique theme, a private entrance, Versace marble tiles and wallpapers, in-room whirlpool bath and outside Jacuzzi hot tubs. Jónsson also offers a Diamond Suite Luxury Pack, opening up the five suites to create a single 3,000sq ft private apartment for large entourages. >>

"The Diamond Suite exclusive package is fit for royalty," Jónsson said on the hotel's website. "It features a spacious living room, dining area, kitchenette, private balcony with two jacuzzis and up to five en suite bedrooms that can also be used for other functions as needed."

If that's not enough, extras include personal butlers, concierges, personal chefs and 24-hour room service, as well as the use of a private driver and Range Rover for your adventuring needs. “We understand that everyone has different needs and requirements, and it is our pleasure to accommodate each guest to the best of our ability," Jónsson said at last year's launch. >>

The hotel's Kef restaurant is run by 2012 Iceland Masterchef winner Jenný Rúnnarsdóttir, and offers exquisite meals created from fresh local ingredients and inspired by traditional Icelandic fare.

"Iceland is an adventurous place," Jónsson said. "It is full of new and exciting experiences. You can snowmobile on top of a glacier, soak in the Blue Lagoon (only a 15 minute drive away), and witness active geysers. We can help you plan your trip, and tailor it to your needs."
