UK’s most exclusive private golf club gets a luxury makeover

Wentworth Golf Club, UK’s most exclusive heritage golf and country club, has undergone a major redesign in an effort to become a premium destination for networking and business meetings, while also retaining its golfing heritage.

Located in the heart of Surrey, this private members’ club was given a luxury makeover by Thorp, a multi-disciplinary design studio, bringing it up to standard for their discerning clientele. Wentworth is also the home of the upcoming BMW PGA Championship, which will be held from 17 to 22 September.

The main club, spanning 30,000 square feet, has been brought to modernity with light-filled rooms adorned with Italian marble bars and a colour scheme of earthy tones throughout.The refurbishment, which took five years to complete, was conducted not only on the golf club — which boasts three expansive 18-hole golf courses — but also on the Tennis and Health club, featuring state of the art facilities and private entertainment spaces.

The origins of Wentworth dates back to 1805, when it was the private residence of the extended family of the Duke of Wellington. Then in 1922, at the behest of George Tarrant, the house and grounds were established as the home of Wentworth Club as we know it today.

Speaking about the new refurbishments, Philippa Thorp, founder of the luxury design studio, expressed her happiness about this “labour of love”.“The refurbishment of Wentworth Golf Club was a labour of love, aiming to create a dynamic space where golf excellence meets networking prowess,” she said.

Philippa then went on to explain the purpose of the redesign: to “enhance the club’s aesthetic appeal”, but at the same time, make sure that it maintains its heritage while also bringing “commercial value to the business”.

“Each area has been thoughtfully designed to cater to a range of activities, from hosting business meetings to wedding receptions and press conferences,” she added.
