Time and space: Rolls-Royce launches the limited edition Phantom Tempus Collection

The Phantom limousine is inspired by time, astronomy and the “infinite reaches of the universe”

Goodwood-based luxury motor company Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has launched a limited-edition collection of its most famous model, the Phantom. The new Phantom Tempus Collection, limited to just 20 examples and already allocated to clients, is designed to encompass time and space in its elegant design.

The exterior of the Phantom Tempus Collection is presented in a new Kairos Blue finish – the bespoke paint incorporates glittering mica flakes that glint "like starlight" under lights – and black exterior detailing. On the bonnet, the Spirit of Ecstasy, now in her 110th year, is personalised with an engraving unique to each client model.

The centrepiece of the astronomical design is the evolution of the brand’s bespoke starlight headliner feature – an internal night sky of fibre-optic lighting and embroidery – into the Pulsar headliner. This is echoed in the swirling pattern of stars presented on the interior of the doors, created by perforations in contrasting leather that is beautiful even when not illuminated. The Phantom’s gallery features 100 individual columns, milled from a single billet of black-anodised and hand-polished aluminium.

“The events of the past year have caused many people, not least our clients, to re-evaluate their sense of and relationship with time. At a moment in history when so much in life seems ephemeral, our patrons are seeking solace in the unique timelessness, longevity and permanence offered by a Rolls-Royce motor car,” says Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Rolls-Royce CEO.

“As we all know, Time never stands still, waits for no one. Hence, we manage it, guard it, account for it, weigh and measure it to its smallest fraction. With Phantom Tempus, we have created a space in which those strictures no longer apply – as illustrated by the deliberate absence of a clock. Rolls-Royce clients are not bound by Time; the outside world with all its pressures and demands are forgotten.”

The model also comes with the Tempus Champagne Chest, with pulsar artwork on the table and thermal flasks for chilling champagne and caviar, four hand-blown crystal flutes arrange to evoke the cylinders of a V12 engine, and a mother-of-pearl caviar spoon.
