A car is never just a car; for high net worth individuals, it's everything from a status symbol to a style icon and embodiment of the lives we lead. The vehicles we drive say something about us – to ourselves and to the world around us.

When we make it big, our cars are one of the ways we show off that success, and the very wealthy know how to choose them with care. From the self-made millionaire to the fashion elite and sporting supremes, we’ve taken a look at the motors of choice for the most moneyed among us.

The self-made millionaire

The self-made millionaire has a message they want to convey: that they not only have financial succes but possess the style and substance to have earned it. According to Lottoland, who examined purchase trends in an article ‘what car would you buy if you won the lottery?’, the Ferrari 458 Italia, Chevrolet Corvette, and Lamborghini Spyder were the choices of a few lottery winners as their first car after becoming wealthy overnight. Unlike the lottery winners, the self-made millionaire's motor of choice is likely to be something less ostentatious, such as Lord Alan Sugar's classic Rolls-Royce, a Bentley or an Aston Martin. Showing the world that the man or woman behind the wheel is not only wealthy, but a class act to boot, these cars are each exquisite examples of top-quality British engineering.

The fashion elite

Those who rule the fashion world are less concerned about reliability and roominess than the self-made millionaire, and more concerned about turning their most fantastical and extravagant dreams into a sterling reality. Their choice of car is not necessarily practical, but is usually both achingly cool and outrageously expensive. That’s why a vintage 1958 Ferrari Testarossa perfectly fits the bill, as evidenced by designer Ralph Lauren, owner of one of the highest value car collections in the world.

The music megastar

The music A-list get paid an exorbitant amount to sell the records that we consume with such eagerness and zeal, and behind the scenes, their extravagant lifestyles are just as dazzling and decadent as they claim in their songs. Rappers like Kanye West and Jay Z have done exceptionally well from their lyrical successes, with the majority driving around in the most luxurious cars on the market. West is a perfect case in point, with his selection of supercars including a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, as well as the stylish Aston Martin DB9.

The sports star

Sports stars are known for their outlandish purchases, and there are some serious petrol heads out there. For the man with millions to burn and an enviable designer lifestyle to boot, a Maserati GranCabrio MC  is a popular pick. The motor of choice for Formula 1 ace Lewis Hamilton, its slick yet muscular bodywork has an engine to match, and it drives beautifully too. Retailing from an expensive minimum price of £114,330, the MC offers strength, style, and substance combined.

If you could pick any of these motors for your dream garage, which one would it be?
