An ode to Sherry: The Glendronach Aged 56 Years whisky

Two centuries of sherry‑cask dedication culminate in a landmark release from a storied Scottish whisky distillery — The Glendronach Aged 56 Years
While some whisky lovers are loyal to peat, others lean towards the rich complexity of a sherry-led dram — making The Glendronach a natural companion. Founded in 1826, the distillery has spent the past two centuries in quiet dialogue with Spanish oak, refining its technique and building a well-respected reputation as a master of sherry-cask maturation. Today, as it enters its third century, The Glendronach has unveiled a definitive archival release: The Glendronach Aged 56 Years.
Distilled in 1968, this newly expression will intrigue The Glendronach connoisseurs, notable as the oldest bottling ever released by the distillery. With only 200 bottles available, a nod to its bicentennial milestone and 200 year history, the vintage features liquid placed in three Oloroso sherry butts in September 1968 before, in 2014, being transitioned into three rare Spanish oak Pedro Ximenez hogsheads, to enrich the original spirit and enhance its character.

Maturing for over half a century within traditional dunnage warehouses, the resulting whisky offers “a structural integrity rarely seen in spirits of this age. It is the ‘Sherry Crescendo’ – a complex, multi-layered tale of dark cacao and ancient spice, refined by the irreplaceable influence of time. At fifty-six years old, it is exceptional” explains Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie. For her, “The 56-Year Old is a stoic masterpiece”.
Speaking of the anniversary and new release, Global Brand Director Adip Agarwal acknowledges The Glendronach’s supporters; “a community of connoisseurs connected by their true appreciation of The Glendronach’s mastery of sherry casks and its high-quality drinking experience. With the limited release of just 200 bottles, a select few will get an opportunity to own and taste this exceptional and rare whisky, shaped by time.”

To house a spirit of such historical gravity for the distillery, The Glendronach commissioned John Galvin, a world-renowned master of sculptural woodcraft. Each of the 200 bottles is presented in a bespoke cabinet hand-carved from American Black Walnut composed of 148 individual elements and requiring over 80 hours of meticulous handiwork. The housing is intended as a physical tribute to the passage of time, the interior lined with rare quilted maple and with bespoke brass metalwork and hand-engraved detailing. Inside nestles a hand-blown Glencairn crystal decanter.
Released in the UK from September 2026, pre-order will be available from select specialist retail stores.
