The Balvenie unveils second whisky in its rare Fifty Collection

The Balvenie has unveiled the second edition of its Fifty Collection, which comprises the Speyside distillery’s rarest single malt whiskies to date

The Balvenie fiftyThe Balvenie is back with the second edition of its Fifty Collection, which comprises the Speyside distillery’s rarest whiskies to date. Limited to just 97 bottles, this single malt whisky marries two 1973 European oak and American oak casks to create notes of molten dates, citrus zest, creamy honey and buttery oak.

Available exclusively at Harrods in the UK, the Balvenie Fifty Collection is a trilogy that celebrates the stories of craftsmanship at the distillery over the past 50 years. Each edition showcases a distinct maturation journey, inspired by the rich tapestry of experiences shared by the makers who have nurtured the whisky over five decades.

The packaging for the Fifty Collection is developed by Croglin; a bespoke craft workshop based in Cumbria. Each presentation contains over 100 different elements, including seven layers of wood in the helix structure which is less than 1/10th of a millimetre thick and a crafted 14 carat gold plated brass display.

Speaking of the new release, the Balvenie malt master Kelsey McKechnie explained how the whisky was created.

“The Balvenie Fifty Collection pays tribute to the makers, craftspeople and custodians who have watched over our liquid for the past five decades. It’s a privilege to select the casks which make up this celebration of our legacy and I am thrilled that we can finally share this special dram,” said Kelsey.

“Marrying together rare casks to create something extraordinary is a fitting testament to the stories that precede each cask. For the second edition, we selected an American oak hogshead filled in 1973 to build on the legacy of the inaugural release. The time spent maturing in American oak has nurtured a beautifully balanced character, with notes of sweet honey and warming oak,” she explained.

“The collection reflects our respect for tradition and our commitment to looking to the future by preserving the rare crafts of whisky making from barley to bottle,” she added.

The third edition of this series, which completes the trilogy, will feature the addition of a 1974 American oak barrel and will be released in 2026.
