Rimac Nevera sets world record for fastest electric car

The Croatian car manufacturer’s Nevera model reached a top speed of 258mph on a closed circuit in Germany

Croatian car manufacturer Rimac Automobili, known for its high-spec fully electric sports cars, has set a new world record for the highest top speed ever clocked by a production electric car with its Nevera model.

During a special event at Germany's Automotive Testing Papenburg track last week, the Rimac Nevera, driven by the brand's chief test driver Miro Zrnčević, reached a top speed of 412kph (258mph) on one of the track's 4km straights. This is just 19mph short of the 277mph top speed recorded by the Koenigsegg Agera RS, currently the world's fastest production car.

Last week's world-record feat is the second to have been achieved by the Rimac Nevera, after an independently verified 8.582-second quarter-mile run in 2021 made it the world’s fastest accelerating production car. Furthermore, its new top speed speed record matches the target set by the Rimac team when the car was first unveiled as a design concept in 2018.

However, speed freaks looking to set their own world record shouldn't get their hopes up as mass-production Rimacs are limited to 219mph.

“To travel at 412kph, or 258mph means travelling at a third of the speed of sound," said Zrnčević of his record-breaking drive. "Simply achieving that alone in a road car is incredibly complex, but in Nevera we have created a car that can travel long distances on a single charge, can tackle tight and twisting race tracks and can drift as well as break straight-line speed records, both for acceleration and V-MAX."
