Legendary Italian designer Giorgio Armani dies aged 91

Giorgio Armani, one of the biggest names in Italian fashion and the godfather of menswear, has died at the age of 91

Giorgio ArmaniGiorgio Armani, the Italian fashion designer and the owner of his eponymous brand, has died at the age of 91. He was one of the biggest names in Italian fashion and is known for completely reimagining men’s and women’s suits for the modern audience. 

In a statement released on the brand’s Instagram, the House of Armani announced that the businessman and fashion magnate passed away peacefully in his sleep, adding that the iconic designer worked until the day he died.

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani. Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones,” the House said in a statement. “Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.”

“In this company, we have always felt like part of a family. Today, with deep emotion, we feel the void left by the one who founded and nurtured this family with vision, passion, and dedication.

“But it is precisely in his spirit that we, the employees and the family members who have always worked alongside Mr. Armani, commit to protecting what he built and to carrying his company forward in his memory, with respect, responsibility, and love,” the statement, which was cosigned by Giorgio Armani’s family and employees, concluded.

Armani started as a fashion company, but then quickly expanded into beauty, fragrance and luxury hotels. Giorgio Armani also designed clothes for artists like Lady Gaga, Zendaya, Cate Blanchett and more as well as film productions like The Wolf of Wall Street. Giorgio ArmaniTributes have poured in from industry peers and celebrities alike, with designer Donatella Versace remembering him as a history maker who “will be remembered forever” while Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni called him “an icon, a tireless worker and a symbol of the best of Italy.”

Away from fashion, Armani also had a partnership with Scuderia Ferrari team, with driver Charles Leclerc expressing the ‘great honour’ of having met the late designer on Instagram. Besides industry accomplishments, Giorgio Armani has also been bestowed with the French Legion of Honour and the Italian Order of Merit for Labour for his work in fashion.
