British Formula 1 driver Lando Norris has made history as he wins his first F1 drivers’ championship title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
British Formula 1 driver Lando Norris has a lot to celebrate, as on 7 December, he made history by winning his first F1 drivers’ championship title by securing third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Marking the final race of the 2025 season, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix saw Lando Norris score enough points with his position on the podium to win the championship – just two points above Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who won the race to take his eighth victory of the year. Lando’s McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri took the second spot on the podium.
The 26 year old was visibly tearful during the final slow lap and post-race, excitedly hugging his family members and McLaren crew once he got out of the car.

“I’ve not cried in a while and I didn’t think I would cry but I did,” said an ecstatic Lando Norris, who also took the time to shout-out his fellow competitors in four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen and teammate Oscar Piastri.
“It feels amazing, I now know what Max feels like. I want to congratulate Max and Oscar, my two biggest competitors the whole season. It’s been a pleasure to race against both of them and an honour, I’ve learned a lot from both of them as well.
“I’ve enjoyed it and it has been a long year but we did it and I’m so proud of everyone,” he added.

McLaren also won the constructors’ title this year, making it the team’s first double win since 1998.
The drivers were presented their trophies in the Louis Vuitton Formula 1 trophy trunks, which are designed to evoke the speed and intensity of a Formula 1 car.
The 2026 Formula 1 season begins in Melbourne, Australia in March 2026, with plenty of new changes – including the addition of an extra team – on the grid. Who wins next year? We’ll certainly be tuning in to find out.
