Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejčíková were crowned the Wimbledon men’s and women’s singles champions respectively
Wimbledon came to a glorious finish as Carlos Alcaraz retained his title after beating Novak Djokovic in an intense match on Sunday. Just a day before that, Barbora Krejčíková won her first ever women’s singles title after beating Jasmine Paolini on the court.
Krejčíková’s match went to a deciding third set, with the Czech tennis ace having won the first, and Paolini winning the second. And because of Barbora’s incredible victory, this is the seventh year in a row Wimbledon has crowned a first-time women’s singles winner.
Speaking after the match, Krejcikova said: “I don’t have any words right now. It’s unreal what just happened. The best day of my tennis career and the best day of my life.”
She also took a moment to congratulate her opponent for an incredible game.Related: The best luxury tennis resorts in Europe
“I want to congratulate Jasmine and her team, she fought for every single ball, in the end I was the lucky one, but it’s amazing what she’s been able to achieve in such a short period,” she said.
On the other hand, the final day of Wimbledon came to a thrilling end when Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic to retain the men’s singles title for the second year in a row.
In 2023, Alcaraz broke Djokovic’s four year streak at Wimbledon by beating him in the final. And on Sunday, history repeated itself once again as he claimed yet another Grand Slam title to his name. With this win, Alcaraz became the sixth player to have won the men’s titles at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year, known as the “Channel Slam”.
Speaking about this achievement, Alcaraz said: “It’s a huge honour for me to be part of those players who have achieved Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. Really glad to be in the same table as Novak to do it. Huge champions; I don’t consider myself a champion yet, not as them, but I try to keep going, to keep building my path, my journey.”
