The Oscars are back. From first-time nominees to surprising snubs, here is who is nominated at the 2025 Academy Awards
On Thursday morning, the 2025 Oscar nominations were announced, officially starting the countdown for Hollywood’s biggest night. Emilia Pérez led the pack with 13 nominations, including best picture — breaking the record for the most Oscar nominations earned by a non-English language film.
This record was previously held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, who had 10 nominations each. Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Emilia Pérez, has also made history as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for best actress.
The film is also nominated for supporting actress (Zoe Saldaña’s first nomination), director, adapted screenplay, international feature, editing, cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, original score, sound, and twice for original song.Trailing not too far behind is the hit musical Wicked (including nominations for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo) and the war epic The Brutalist, with 10 nominations each. They are followed by A Complete Unknown — the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet — and the papal thriller Conclave, with eight nominations.
There were many first time nominees this year, including Succession alums Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong, who are both nominated for best supporting actor for A Real Pain (Jesse Eisenberg’s Holocaust trip comedy) and The Apprentice (the Donald Trump biopic) respectively. Strong’s co-star Sebastian Stan, who played Donald Trump, is also a first time nominee for best actor.Conclave co-stars Isabella Rossellini and Ralph Fiennes both nabbed nominations for supporting actress and best actor respectively. Meanwhile, Monica Barbaro earned her first supporting actress nomination for playing the role of Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown.
Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film The Substance also nabbed a bunch of nominations — including best director (she is the only woman nominated), screenwriting and best film — with Demi Moore landing the first nomination of her career for actress in a leading role. There were some surprising snubs as well. Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman and Zendaya, who were frontrunners for Maria, Babygirl and Challengers respectively, did not receive a nomination. In fact, both of Luca Guadagnino’s films — Challengers and Queer — were completely shut out, despite being nominated at other award shows. Dune: Part Two, while nominated for best picture and a few other categories, lost out on some key awards — including best director for Denis Villeneuve.
With so many surprises and snubs this year, it remains to be seen who will take home the coveted Oscar.
The 97th Academy Awards will be held on 2 March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The show will be hosted by Conan O’Brien.
