Showcasing the sartorial genius of Azzedine Alaia for the first time, the Design Museum's Azzedine Alaia: The Couturier was actually conceived and co-curated – along with Mark Wilson, Chief Curator of the Groninger Museum – by the designer himself ahead of his death in November 2017. Known as ‘couture’s rebellious outsider,’ it features some of Alaia's most memorable designs, dating back from the late eighties to 2017 – including his trademark zipped dress, bandage dress, and stretch body, donned by celebrity fans such as Naomi Campbell and Lady Gaga.
